Find out what information you can redact before sending them to the Tenancy Tribunal.
Changes to Tenancy Tribunal documents:
- Almost all documents you provide to the Tenancy Tribunal will be shared with the other party.
- This includes documents like property management agreements and insurance policies.
- This change ensures both parties have access to the same information, which is part of natural justice.
Exceptions to the changes:
- Medical or confidential information provided only to support an adjournment request (a request to postpone a hearing) will not be shared unless you ask for it to be disclosed.
- Medical or confidential information provided as part of your claim will be shared.
If your documents hold irrelevant sensitive information:
- You can remove (redact) irrelevant personal details such as addresses, dates of birth, or bank account numbers before sending them to the Tribunal.
- Anything you remove will not be considered in the decision.
If sharing someone else’s identity puts them at risk:
- You can remove identifying details, but if their evidence is used in the hearing, their identity will likely need to be disclosed to the other party.
- The Tribunal can make orders to suppress publication of their identity.
If your documents include relevant confidential information you do not want made public:
- You should not remove or redact relevant information.
- Instead, you can apply for a suppression order and explain why the information should not be published.
This new approach applies to all applications filed from 1 January 2026.
