The healthy homes standards are designed to make homes warmer, drier, and healthier for tenants. They introduce minimum standards for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage, and draught stopping in rental properties.

Keeping your property up to standard
Landlords who do not meet their obligations for the healthy homes standards are in breach of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 and may face consequences, like financial penalties.
Compliance timeframes
All boarding houses, Kainga Ora and registered community housing provider houses must already comply with the healthy homes standards.
Private rentals need to comply between 1 July 2021 and 1 July 2025. the date depends on if there has been a new or renewed tenancy during that time.
