A four year information campaign is continuing to educate both landlords and tenants about changes to the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) which came into force last year.
The changes mean that landlords now have to provide working smoke alarms in all rental properties as well as ensure that all new tenancy agreements have an Insulation Statement, outlining whether there is insulation, what type and condition. Warmer rental homes are healthier for tenants. From 1 July 2019, insulation will be compulsory in all rental homes.
An advertising campaign has been underway over the summer months to educate landlords about the changes whilst a student campaign has recently got underway to ensure young people know about the changes and what their rights are, particularly as they return to their studies and start living in their new flats.
The campaign includes practical, how-to advice. While it focuses on better rental homes – warmer, drier, safer – it also encourages better relationships between landlords and tenants.
If you’re a landlord, you have until 1 July 2019 to ensure your rental home is fully insulated.
