A guide to completing your Licensed Building Practioner application form

Introduction

This guide will help you work through your application to become a licensed building practitioner.

Your completed application will comprise:

  1. The application form
  2. The forms for each licence class you are applying for. These include your:
    • work history
    • selected project records
    • evidence checklist (for Design licence classes)
    • questionnaires (for Carpentry and Site licence classes)
    • referee reports or contact details
    • supporting evidence.
  3. Any documents and supporting evidence the forms ask you for, including:
    • a certified copy of your driver's licence or birth certificate or passport
    • two identical recent passport photographs
    • a certified copy of any relevant qualification(s).
  4. The total fee for your application.

Note: If you are applying to become a licensed building practitioner you should be familiar with the regulatory environment that relates to your work in the building and construction industry (for example, the Building Code, consent processes, the Licensed Building Practitioner Scheme).

Your application pack contains a booklet called Understanding the regulatory environment.

It relates to the specific licence class(es) you are applying for. You need to read this booklet so the assessor can ask you some questions about it. This will be done over the phone or, if you are applying for a Design licence, at your face-to-face assessment.

Read through all guidance information and notes for your selected licence class(es) before you fill out the forms. This will give you a clear idea of what information you need to provide.

If you leave out any required information, or forget to attach any required documents, this may delay the processing and assessment of your application. The checklist at the front of the application form will help you work through your application.

Keep a copy of your application for your own records, in case your assessor has any queries.

All information on your application will be electronically scanned. Therefore can you please provide:

  • information on A4-sized paper only
  • information on one side of the paper only
  • copies and not original documents
  • documents with no holes (this means not bound unless with a staple in the top left corner).

Note: If you are not sure whether you have the right application pack, go to the Department's website at www.dbh.govt.nz/occupational-licensing or phone the Licensed Building Practitioner Helpline on 0800 60 60 50 (from overseas: +64 4 238 63125) for advice.

Once you have sent in your application, the Registrar will write to you, confirming that it has been received. You will receive a Licensed Building Practitioner reference number which you can quote if you need to make any enquiries about your application.

The public register

You are required by the Building Act 2004 to provide all the available information requested in the Personal details, Type of licence class and Company and body corporate involvement sections of the application form. Some of this information will appear on the public register of licensed building practitioners.

Note: If you are a Registered Architect or a Chartered Professional Engineer you will be treated as if you are licensed in the Design 3 licence class from November 2007. You cannot apply to be licensed in any Design classes because you are not allowed to duplicate your registration. Your name will not be on the licensed building practitioner register but your registration details will be held on the register of your own professional body. You can apply for other licence classes if you wish to.
