Fast facts from the building and housing sector

  • There were 1,478,709 occupied dwellings recorded in the 2006 Census. The Reserve Bank estimates the value of private sector residential dwellings at approximately $605 billion at the end of June 2007.
  • The construction industry contributed approximately 5 percent of New Zealand’s GDP in the March 2007 year.
