Education and training programmes for building officials

The Department is working with stakeholders to develop an education and training strategy for building officials. The broad strategy includes a range of specific projects aimed at ensuring building officials and people who wish to become building officials in the future have access to appropriate education and training opportunities.

There is a distinct difference between education and training.

  • Education can be described as programmes of study linked to competencies and formal qualifications. A formal education programme is one way to provide building officials with access to learning the specific core skills and knowledge that are needed to be an effective building official. It is expected that a National Diploma in Building Controls will be one of the new education programmes developed specifically for building officials.
  • Training can be described as short courses, seminars and other programmes of learning. Ongoing training courses are a way that building officials can retain and update essential core skills and knowledge and remain current as changes affect the environment in which building controls operate.

Both formal education and ongoing training are essential to ensure building officials have the opportunities to attain the right skills and knowledge and to build on these throughout their careers.

The Department has endorsed Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) as the preferred provider of national qualifications for building officials. For more information about WelTec see the Learning curve section in the building controls newsletter, Codewords, or visit their website [External website]. .

Education institutes and training providers

There is a range of tertiary education institutes that offer education and private training establishments and training providers that offer training.

For information about education and training courses see the ‘Learning Curve’ section in the building controls newsletter, Codewords.
